So, I had a look around the 'net and discovered that the very inexpensive Linksys NSLU2 unit (nicknamed the Slug) can be hacked with 3rd party firmware. Got one and had a play around with it and it's quite cool. I've installed an iTunes server on the Slug and it works really well. OK, it doesn't have RAID 5 and hot swap disks etc but for the price it's pretty neat. I've been using it to stream the kids movies through XBMC which is great as it means the DVDs can be stored safely away from sticky hands!
